The Scenic Rail Pass is already discount travel, so there no discounts for seniors, backpackers or a group of people traveling together.

  • Can I change the dates on my Rail Pass?
  • Do I get a refund if I cancel my Scenic Rail Pass?
  • Can I change names on Rail Pass?
  • Can I add people to the Pass once it is purchased?

A

Once issued, the Scenic Rail Pass is non-refundable and cannot be transferred to another person or start date. You can not add people to The Scenic Rail Pass once purchased.

  • Can I turn up to the Station with my Scenic Rail Pass and will I be guaranteed a seat?

A

Yes you can turn up to the Train Station with your Pass Number, however you are not guaranteed a seat on the train if you have not made a prior booking or reservation.

  • Am I guaranteed a seat on any train service?
  • Do I need to book my sectors?
  • Can I just turn up?

A

A Scenic Rail Pass does NOT guarantee a seat on The Overlander, The TranzCoastal or The TranzAlpine train services or a space on an Interislander ferry service unless a reservation has been made. It is advisable to pre-book your train and/or ferry travel sector/s

  • How do I receive confirmations for my travel sector/s?

A

You will be emailed a Scenic Rail Pass Itinerary of your travel sectors containing the departure dates, departure/arrival times, and check-in times.

  • If there is one or more persons traveling on a Scenic Rail Pass, they must they always travel together?

A

Yes, groups and families can be booked on one Scenic Rail Pass Pass and must always travel together.

  • Can I add a additional ferry travel sector to my Pass?

A

Yes you can. Bookings for Interislander travel must be made 24 hours prior to scheduled departure time. You will be given an Interislander reference number on you e-ticket/itinerary which you must produce at the terminal on the day of travel.

  • Do I have to travel all of the 7days?

A

It is your own free choice to decide where and when and what days you would like to travel within a 7 day period from the start date of your Pass.

  • Is it cheaper to travel using a Scenic Rail Pass?

A

This depends how much you use/travel using your Scenic Rail Pass. The more you travel more money you save.

  • What travel is excluded when using a Scenic Rail Pass?

A

You can not use your Pass on The Capital Connection, Wairarapa Connection, Auckland and Wellington suburban train services.

  • Does the Rail Pass include the costs for bikes and extra luggage?

A

No. The Rail Pass does not include the items, and you will need to book and pay for these costs separately for each train and ferry travel sector.

You are allowed a maximum of 2 bags per person not exceeding 20 Kgs and each being no more than 200 linear centimeters in size (height plus length plus width).
